Research Universities are esteemed public institutions officially recognized by the Cabinet on 11 October 2006 to become a leading university of research and higher education. This establishment aims to enhance research, development, and commercialization efforts while increasing the number of postgraduate candidates, Post-Doctoral Research Fellows, and faculty members with Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Additionally, the Research Universities must enforce strategies to boost the enrolment of international students and enhance the rankings of higher education institutions in Malaysia. The Centre of Excellence shall be established and empowered to support the Research Universities.
The Research Universities vision is to take the initiative and actively generate innovative research ideas, identify new methods, and contribute to intellectual development. Our goal is to pursue cutting-edge knowledge across a variety of disciplines consistently.
The Research Universities mission is to become the nation's pulse and driving force, providing opportunities for students and academics to exchange ideas and conduct research in a conducive atmosphere that ultimately drives the exploration of knowledge and acts as a catalyst for economic and wealth creation. This, in turn, improves the quality and purpose of universal human life.
The University of Research must operate as a recognized and legitimate institution to achieve its mission and objectives. Based on a strategy agreed upon by the Malaysian Research Universities Network (MRUN) during a meeting in Universiti Malaya on 7 January 2016, the establishment of a special secretariat, namely the MRUN Secretariat. The MRUN Secretariat serves as the centre of coordination of five (5) Research Universities in Malaysia.
The Secretariat aims to recognise the MRUN as a legal entity through legislation. Its formation is a crucial step in this recognition process, enabling the MRUN to pursue its strategic goals. Additionally, establishing the Secretariat will enhance the global network by fostering smart partnerships and allowing the Research Universities to exercise full autonomy in decision-making.
